We do fundamental research to understand the motor system and translational research to understand plasticity and reorganization of the central nervous system following stroke.

In Canada, each year approximately 50 000 of Canadians are victim of a stroke that will either result in death or desastrous consequences on their quality of life. A great number of these patients have physical problems that persist several months following the lesion.

A motor recovery occurs in the months following a stroke. Numerous studies conclude that this recovery is supported by adaptive plasticity that occurs in distant, intact brain areas. We are studying the mechanisms underlying the motor recovery and are developping novel approaches to maximize it.
